oil stick study i
oil stick was a mystical medium that i learned about when i when through a phase of consuming every piece of media on jean-michel basquiat i could find. he’s inspired me a lot, and i wanted to give oil stick a try for the longest time.
like a few of my other works as well, oil stick study i was just a page in a sketchbook that i reproduced on a canvas.
it’s funny, i got my hands on oil stick while traveling. i had just quit my job in the netherlands and went to france, malta, croatia, to feel the freedom and get to know myself again, now that i wasn’t exchanging my body and time and life for money. if you know oil stick or oil in general, that is not the medium you choose while traveling. that’s why it’s funny.
there was a cabin i was staying in for two days, in the outskirts of paris. i painted several pages with oil stick. then i had to keep going. those pages stuck together and ripped each other apart. i didn’t think that through.
but either way, i loved using oil stick. i also created a beautiful technique, combining oil stick and ink. a layer of ink over oil stick makes for very unique and unpredictable patterns. i did that with ‘money it’s a gas’ as well.
i love how oil stick study i is minimalistic but loud and vibrant at the same time.
