sun project

phase one

this project started at the beginning of winter in 2025.

that winter was especially cold in lithuania, and as a way to bring some warmth to our snowy days, i started the sun project. the idea was to paint thirteen small artworks depicting the sun, one for each week of winter, and to scatter them across vilnius. or wherever i was at that time.

in the end, nine of the paintings were left in vilnius, two in panevėžys, one in kaunas and one all the way in amsterdam.

it was an effort to keep sunshine present even in the dead of winter. and that was accomplished not only through the sun motifs, but also through a sense of community, of sharing.

i’d post the location of the drop as soon as i did it, and people were invited to find it. i didn't expect it but that really became the best part—the reciprocity from others, who were also seeking for little joys in the darkest of days.

out of the thirteen drops, seven finders reached out to let me know they’ve found the artwork.

though even without knowing what happened to my artworks, i definitely learned a lesson in letting go. the first few drops were the most difficult to leave without knowing if someone will pick it up, throw it out, destroy it, if it will find a forever home or be torn apart by the forces of nature—or the city. but by the last one, i think i fully accepted that the interaction between the art and the world is as important of an aspect as any other. maybe they find their place somewhere, maybe they don’t.

on a more personal note, the art drops forced me to go outside, which i dreaded when the temperature dropped below -10 degrees celsius. then even more so when it dropped below -20. but it was needed. scouting for locations, leaving artworks in inconspicuous places, going to the nearest cafe to put together videos with the location clues. it felt like play.

phase two

it was a spontaneous decision to do sun project phase two. thirteen more artworks, for every week of summer, 2026. the meaning of it had to shift though, because the sun did arrive—we were successful in summoning it the first time.

however, the sun motif crept into my larger artworks and became one of my favorite motifs to use. in a way, this phase of the project is steering towards the self. from the sun being an external force to it being internal. in astrology, the ruler of my first house is the sun, so this archetype is close to my heart whatever season it may be.

this time, not every artwork will necessarily feature the sun, but they all will have a uniform voice and tone. i also wanted to be more intentional with my timing, so all paintings will be dropped on saturdays, the majority still being vilnius-based.

i’ve also opened a kofi, to extend the opportunity for people to be supporters. completely optional, but now possible—to cover that cafe visit after each drop.

you can follow along for individual drop clues on my tiktok and instagram.

thank you for the support, whatever form it may take. phase two will be even bigger than phase one. <3

first drop: june 6.
